Can you wash your car when it’s cold or frosty?

Cold isn’t an automatic ‘no’ — but freezing temperatures can turn a wash into a problem fast.

If the air temperature is close to or below freezing, water can refreeze on trim, locks, and around the doors. That can cause sticking doors and frozen seals.

When it’s generally fine

  • Above about 3–4°C with low wind chill.
  • You can dry the car promptly (towel dry, short drive to clear water).

When to avoid it

  • 0–2°C with a breeze (fast refreezing risk).
  • Overnight frost expected soon after you finish.

In winter, a quick salt rinse can still be worthwhile — just focus on underarches and lower panels, then dry the door shuts.
